It is
said covered bridges
have the power to
grant wishes. To
have a wish come
true,
horse-and-buggy
passengers would
shut their eyes,
raise their feet and
hold their breath
for the length of
the bridge. Today's
passengers hold
their breath for the
length of the bridge
for good luck.

The longest covered
bridge in the world
is at
Hartland.
The 1,282-foot
length structure is
102 years old in
2003. It spans the
beautiful St. John
River and was
officially opened
July 4, 1901.
Hartland Covered
Bridge National
Historic Site is
located off Route 2
(TCH) between Routes
